She spoke to Mixmag MENA about the story behind her latest single, her plans for her TREGAMBE label, her ADE 2023 performances, her MENA shows and her upcoming collaboration.
Hey Juliet. Actually, we had a chat in Ankara two years ago when you came to the Turkey capital for Sonance Festival that took place next to the Mogan Lake. Maybe you remember?
Yeah, I do. That was really cool. That was a great festival.
At the Amsterdam Dance Event, you had three shows. How was ADE 2023 for you?
I concentrated just on the shows this year because otherwise, you can get carried away very easily. I've got the Gashoulder with Awakenings and Drumcode, and then at the Crane for Mixmag Netherlands. And then I had a performance at Verknipt.
Your latest single is called "Dad's Backyard". Is it linked to your childhood somehow? Or childhood memories?
The reason why I called it that was because a couple of years ago, I was visiting back home in Australia, and I was in my dad's backyard, obviously. And I was doing some field recordings of, like, the Australian native birds and insects or whatever I could find. And then I put it into a track and I had like the Kookaburra as the main feature, and I wanted to make it a bit more organic with such elements.
Before the ADE week, you played at a real-life bat cave. Was it the first-time for you? How was the experience?
That was amazing. I wasn't expecting it to be so big. It’s actually Europe's biggest cave that they're doing parties or they're allowed to do parties in. The sound was incredible, actually. And like just to have people, like dancing inside… It was a really amazing experience.
Has anybody seen any real bats during that gig?
I think later at night they came out, but not while I was playing [laughs].
Two years ago you launched your label, TREGAMBE. And what is next for the label? What are your next goals for the label?
One of the recent releases came out by the UK-based Nancy Live and Risa Taniguchi. Risa is from Tokyo, Japan. And then I've got a VA compilation that will be out in December, which will then finish off like the releases for the year. And then we've got an exciting schedule already for next year, with new up-and-coming artists. And I like the fact that they're from all around the world as well. You know, it's kind of like uniting everybody together.
Have you ever hosted a label showcase event for TREGAMBE before?
Not yet. But that's one of the big plans for next year. I think I wanted to make sure I have enough artists on the label and then I can develop the brand and build something bigger from there.
Apart from Turkey, you have had shows in some countries in the MENA region like Bahrain, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Will you have more upcoming events in the region of the Middle East and North Africa?
The latest show in the region recently took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That was really exciting. It was my first time in Saudi Arabia. Then after that I went to India, which I know is it's further past, but that was for me a really nice experience.
You also had your first Mixmag The LAB performance this year.
Yes, that's right. That was in India in Mumbai which was an awesome place to do it, because I've also performed in India quite a number of times and I just love the energy that comes from performing there and everyone's just really passionate about the music. They love dancing. It was a great show.
What is your closest release in the pipeline following "Dad's Backyard"?
I've got a collaboration coming up, which is the t-shirt that I'm wearing, which is "Velvet Tears". It's going to be called the track title and out on Customized Culture, which is run by two guys from Hamburg in Germany called ANDATA. That will be out soon. So I'm excited. I played the track for the first time at ADE.
