Bergsonist leads new Air Texture compilation focused on Moroccan talent

New York-based Moroccan multidisciplinary artist, composer and DJ Bergsonist(Selwa Abd) has curated the latest edition of Air Texture’s Place compilation series, titled ‘Place: Morocco’.

The project focuses on spotlighting the evolving electronic music scene across Morocco, featuring tracks by artists based in or hailing from the country, including KOUMIYA, gbw9, Ziryab, Jbilo and Bergsonist herself.

In a release note shared via Bandcamp, Bergsonist comments: “Curating music compilations has taught me that the best results often come from following an intuitive approach based on respect and trust.” She describes the release as “a mix of sonic contributions from irl & Internet friends, their connections, and talented artists I've discovered through platforms like SoundCloud.”

The compilation aims to “break away from commercial norms, steering clear of the commercial rap, pop and DJ scenes that often dominate the spotlight.” She adds, “At the moment, there’s an inspiring wave of Moroccan musicians, artists, designers, filmmakers, and thinkers creating groundbreaking work and elevating Morocco’s cultural presence on the global stage.”

All proceeds from the release are being donated to INSAF, a Moroccan nonprofit organisation that supports women and children through shelter, legal and psychological aid, vocational training and reintegration programmes. Following the recent El Haouz earthquake, the organisation has expanded its support efforts to include victims of the disaster. Bergsonist, who grew up in Casablanca, recalls learning about INSAF’s work in school, describing the collaboration as “a full-circle moment.”

Place is a location-specific compilation series from Air Texture, with each instalment raising funds for grassroots causes tied to the featured region.
