Bluetoof returns to Infa Red for his new EP
The British-Moroccan artist's new EP features a fusion of personal introspection and broadly accessible sounds
British-Moroccan DJ and producer Bluetoof AKA Ben Farjani has released a surprise EP.
The 'Newt Licker' EP picks up where Farjani's last release, 'Diggin A Hole', left off: a sonic journey that combines introspection with his "wigged out, bass heavy" soundscape.
Speaking to Mixmag, Bluetoof said that 'Newt Licker' is a "development of all the elements of my core sound."
He added: "I've been reflecting a lot about the kind of music I'm writing and if I'm being honest, I've been torn between making loads of really personal, introspective music and stuff that's accessible to a wider audience.
"This project is a mixture of those ideas."
While the title-track is "straight up written to be played at raves", the EP's lead single 'Lost between A & N' is inspired by "a crazy trip" back from Morocco with his granddad, where his relative got pulled at customs for having an undeclared frozen sea bass in his carry on. As a result, Farjani and his grandad missed their flight and were stuck between Tetouan and London.
"It was pure chaos," says the Rinse FM resident.
While all of this was going on, Bluetoof was meant to be Bermondsey-bound for the 'Dancing for Morocco & Libya' fundraiser he organised together with Venue MOT, Late Night Shopper and local members of the North African diaspora.
"We eventually got new flights, costing me p's, and I made it to MOT two minutes before my set started. It was really hectic."
