Nene H curates new Gaza fundraising compilation on her UMAY imprint
‘Letters to a Future Palestine’ features 23 different artists across 19 tracks
Nene H has curated a compilation album for her UMAY imprint, ‘Letters to a Future Palestine’ — with all profits going to Gaza community kitchens operated by World Central Kitchen (WCK).
Landed today, the project features 19 tracks from 23 artists, including artists from Palestine and “international allies” from Lebanon, Egypt, Europe, Ghana, Kurdistan, Syria, Iran, Armenia, Turkey and Tanzania — such as Alinka, Mohajer and ESTOC.
The Turkish-born and Berlin-based DJ and musician announced the project via a post on Instagram, saying: "'Letters for a Future Palestine’ is a profound and culturally rich compilation that brings together the talents of Palestinian artists and their international allies.”
She continued, “This project serves as a postcard from a future Palestine, aspiring to reconnect with the cultural renaissance disrupted over the past century.”
The title of the project, “is a manifestation of a self-determined future where a free Palestine thrives. It is a powerful statement against the portrayal of oppression as the sole narrative.”
This is reflected in the artwork, created by artist Rimbawan Gerilya, which, “is inspired by a postcard we imagine receiving from a future Palestine in which Palestinians are thriving. The postcard itself depicts the four colours of the modern Palestinian flag.”
The project marks the latest release for her UMAY label, which was launched in January 2023 as a platform aimed at representing South Asian, Western Asian, African and QTBIPOC artists, an imprint through which she aims to “build a fair ecosystem within the modern music industry”.
Earlier this year, Love Boat Records also released a compilation album for Palestine, entitled ‘We Will Stay Here”. Shanti Celeste also released a single on Tuesday (June 25) raising money for Gaza, entitled ‘SLB’.
