Sama’ Abdulhadi shares statement on upcoming Sónar performance

Sama’ Abdulhadi has shared a written statement reflecting on her upcoming performance at Sónar Festival in Barcelona, addressing the mounting pressure on artists and institutions amid calls for greater political accountability in the music industry.

In a statement shared on social media, Sama’ Abdulhadi said, “I want to share that I’m in direct dialogue with both the BDS Movement, the founders and curators of Sónar Festival and the electronic music community which I was once so proud to be a part of.”

She confirmed that Sónar had responded to community concerns by cutting ties with major sponsors, stating, “As of right now, Sonar has agreed to drop McDonald’s and Coca-Cola in response to the pressure from various communities and I’m still scheduled to perform on the Sonar by Day stage next week, as shown in their final lineup today.”

However, the artist emphasised that these steps are not enough, urging the festival to adopt a longer-term position on its associations. “I believe Sonar needs to go further, not just responding to immediate concerns, but taking a real stance moving forward. This includes joining Barcelona’s City Council and local political parties in putting the Fira convention venue under intense pressure to stop hosting conventions connected to military industries.”

Her statement arrives at a time of growing scrutiny over the involvement of multinational corporations and venues tied to defence-related industries in cultural events. As an artist known for expressing cultural resistance through techno, Sama’ Abdulhadi reflected on the personal weight of the decision, adding, “I say this as a Palestinian who grew up under occupation and has lived this nightmare my whole life — and who has dedicated my career to sharing my culture globally through music.”

While still slated to perform, she concluded that her participation remains under careful consideration. “Choosing to continue to take part in this event isn’t easy, and I need more time to process, listen, and find clarity on where I stand. As always, Free Palestine.”

This year’s edition of Sónar Festival will run from 12 to 14 June.
