New Portuguese showcase festival SQUARE launches open call for artists

SQUARE, a new showcase festival debuting in Portugal next January, is on the hunt for artists to perform at its inaugural event.

The new cross-city festival will take place from January 29 to February 1, 2025, across four locations in Portugal: Braga, Barcelos, Famalicão, and Guimarães.

Set to showcase artists from all over the world, SQUARE promises a “diverse and representative” line-up serving as a “unifying platform, bringing together local scenes with artists and industry professionals spanning the continent of Europe and beyond.”

Earlier this month, SQUARE launched an open call for artists and bands who might be interested in performing at the debut event - calling for “artists who work and reside on the three continents bordered by the Atlantic Ocean (Africa, Americas, and Europe)”.

Any musical genre is welcome, they confirmed, with any line-up configuration and music produced in any language. The selection of applicants will be made by SQUARE’s programming team.

The call for artists is open now until July 31, 2024, at 23:59PM (GMT+1). Successful applicants will be told if they’re due to participate by September 2024.

All successful applicants will receive a performance fee of €750, as well as catering, accommodation for those living more than 60km from the festival, a technical rider, and a backline.

“SQUARE connects and celebrates the talent that lives and works within the margins,” the festival announced on Instagram earlier this month. “SQUARE celebrates diversity by creating a networking space for emerging talent and new music trends bursting out of these territories.”

SQUARE is part of Braga25, a programme celebrating the city of Braga as the Portuguese Capital of Culture, showcasing “national creativity” in a wider European context.
