AMAS and Frithjof-Martin Grabner rework Bach on new collaborative album, ‘SRDNG x LPZG’

AMAS have released ‘SRDNG x LPZG’, a new collaborative album with double bassist Frithjof-Martin Grabner that reinterprets the work of Johann Sebastian Bach through the aesthetics of minimal, dub techno and ambient music.

The album originated in Pula, located at the southern tip of Sardinia, where AMAS extracted and digitally reworked elements from 14 Bach compositions. Working from a temporary studio, the duo combined these fragments with local field recordings, constructing a series of minimalist electronic foundations. Those recordings later travelled to Leipzig, where they were expanded through a collaborative session with Frithjof-Martin Grabner at the historic HMT Leipzig.

According to the artists, the recording process was informed by the spontaneous spirit of Miles Davis’ soundtrack work for Ascenseur pour l’échafaud, favouring intuition and atmosphere over strict technical precision. Grabner’s improvisations utilise the full sonic range of the double bass, often blurring the distinction between acoustic instrumentation and electronically processed textures.

AMAS consist of two long-time friends from southern Germany whose collaboration balances sound design, production and artistic direction. Their work is characterised by melodic, warm and concept-driven electronic compositions, with visual identity and narrative development playing a central role in each project.

Frithjof-Martin Grabner is a well-established figure within Germany’s classical and jazz music circles. Having studied at the Stuttgart Academy of Music and performed extensively as both a classical and jazz double bassist, he currently serves as Professor of Double Bass at the Leipzig University of Music and Theatre. Best known for his work in Baroque concert repertoires across central and southern Germany, ‘SRDNG x LPZG’ marks his first recorded collaboration within an electronic music context, bringing his improvisational approach into dialogue with AMAS’ production-led sound world.

Alongside its digital release, the 14-track album ‘SRDNG x LPZG’ has been issued as a limited double LP edition of 200 copies worldwide. Pressed on 180g vinyl, the package also features a special 3D-effect front cover, continuing the visual language established throughout the AMAS series.
