High demand: Tickets of 2023’s biggest music festivals fly off the shelves
Despite increased prices, Tomorrowland, Lowlands and Glastonbury tickets sell out
Europe's most popular summer festivals sold out within a matter of minutes, despite the steep increase in ticket prices. Lowlands sold out in less than 15 minutes, despite the cost of tickets increasing from €255 to €300. Charlotte de Witte, Underworld, Moderat, Sherelle and Billie Eilish will all be performing at the festival, which will take place in the Netherlands between August 18–20 this year.
In a podcast, the festival's director, Eric van Eerdenburg, spoke on the rising costs, stating, “Inflation has hit us hard. It is not in our interest to have an expensive ticket. It is in our interest to have a ticket that is as cheap as possible, because then it is easier to sell your tickets. But it’s no different. All refugee shelters are full of stuff from the festival industry, everything is becoming much more expensive and harder to get. People who work for us have all submitted their salary demands and we must also comply with them. It’s a tough cookie to swallow, but we’re going to deliver something good for it.”
Down the Rabbit Hole, the sister festival of Lowlands, has followed in its footsteps with a remarkable price hike attributed to inflation and rising expenses, resulting in an even faster sellout this year.
Tomorrowland has managed to sell all 400,000 tickets for its upcoming edition, with a remarkable 50% of them being sold to Belgian fans in just 20 minutes. The festival is set to return to its two-weekend format, with an impressive lineup of over 600 DJs performing across 14 stages, including the likes of Paul Kalkbrenner, Amelie Lens, Adam Beyer, Adriatique, Nora En Pure, ANNA, Claptone, Juliet Fox, and many more.
Lowlands and Tomorrowland festivals sold out in a flash, following the remarkable one-hour sellout of the UK's Glastonbury festival - with tickets prices increased by a hefty 26% for the 2023 edition. Reports of “incredible demand” for the 135,000 weekend tickets were only made more impressive by the fact that coach packages sold out within 22 minutes. However, the sale was unable to beat the record set in 2019 of just 34 minutes due to a “technical glitch”.
