Thoom frames new album around what she describes as “the immigrant mentality”

Beirut-born, Los Angeles-based artist Thoom has released her latest album, 'Everyday, Everything Is At Stake', a nine-track record created between Lebanon and Los Angeles.

Released on 28 August, the album, executive-produced by 100 gecs’ Dylan Brady, brings together Thoom’s experimental electronic approach with elements of pop, Arabic music and hyperpop, reflecting the different musical and cultural contexts that have informed her work. Two of its tracks, 'December Forever' and 'Towards the Sky', were released as singles ahead of the album.

'Everyday, Everything Is At Stake' is centred in part around what Thoom describes as the “immigrant mentality”, exploring her relationship with Lebanon and the United States and her experience of living between the two. The record brings her American pop influences together with Arabic and experimental elements rather than presenting them as separate sides of her work.

Born Zeynab Marwan, Thoom moved to the United States as a child and later became involved in Chicago’s DIY music scene, having previously played drums in an all-female punk band as a teenager in Beirut. Her work has since drawn on her experiences across Lebanon and the US, moving between different languages, musical styles and approaches to songwriting and production.

A limited-edition pressing of the album on magenta glitter vinyl was also offered through Vertigo Vinyl as a VV Exclusive. Available for order for a 72-hour period, each copy was hand-numbered according to the final number sold, while 300 units were offered with a signed insert. The exclusive vinyl edition has since sold out.
