Juno Download announces closure after 20 years in operation
Since launching in 2006, Juno Download has become a key destination for electronic music listeners searching for new releases
Digital music marketplace Juno Download has announced that it will shut down after 20 years in operation.
Announcing the news via a statement on its website, the platform said: "It's been our privilege to share some of the most incredible music from the most amazing artists, but we're sorry to say, that the time has come to say goodbye. There's still plenty of great music available from Traxsource, Beatport, Mixupload and Volumo, but for now, this is Juno Download signing off. You can download previous orders from your account, and if you need to get in touch, please send us a message, and we will help out however we can."
According to MusicTech, the closure will not affect Juno Records, the company's vinyl-focused retail arm.
Founded in 2006, Juno Download established itself as a go-to destination for dance music listeners searching for new releases. Operating independently, it offered an alternative to iTunes while building a reputation for providing some of the most competitively priced downloads on the market.
Speaking to Resident Advisor, Juno Download COO Lucas Garcia reflected on the decision, saying: "It's obviously a sad day, but as streaming has become the dominant model of digital music consumption, artists and labels are now more connected than ever with their fans via social media and 'direct-to-fan' services like Bandcamp, so the role of the music webstore is becoming less significant."
